Mac is a Super Volunteer!
Most mornings, if you wander downstairs at Norman Williams Public Library you will see Mac (James) McClelland – Super Volunteer – with his rolling cart of supplies mending or sorting and pricing book donations. Mac says it’s “a ton of fun” because he gets to handle all sorts of books and is surrounded by interesting people.
Though much remains as it was back in the early 2000s when he first came to Woodstock, Mac has seen many aspects of the town and library evolve. He first borrowed books from NWPL when working at the Shackleton Furniture showroom on Elm Street and still gets his morning coffee at the Village Butcher.
With a background in teaching English and Creative Writing, Mac began his tenure at the library nearly two decades ago helping out at the circulation desk and shelving. Then the folks who did repairs for the collection showed him the basics. Next came the sorting of book donations for the book sales.
In 2007, a home-schooled student volunteered a few times to earn his Eagle Scout badge and continued to volunteer weekly for years. Mac still uses the systems they developed to review and value used book donations.
Library staff has come and gone, children have grown and flown, but Mac’s connections with many in our community endure. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please let us know!
