Artist Statement

“There is a remarkable abundance of examples found as one begins to explore the merits of the architectural history found in Vermont. Generally speaking, for many towns statewide, there fortunately exists an underlying sentiment that: keeping abreast of 21st century design norms is at best a matter of negligible concern.  As a result it is the good fortune of many communities who have, over the years, handed down a legacy of appreciation in the preservation of these aged architectural gems which speak of an era when building design was not based on brevity of detail, nor tethered to modernistic design doctrines. It just seems to be understood that what was good enough for past generations is still good enough for today.

“Regardless of the intended function of a building type, most civic structures have a tendency to assert a self-empowered stature of enduring stability.  This observation seems consistent with the character of the older libraries which stand apart in their stately appearance, and their purpose is always clearly stated. More often than not, there is a welcoming aura which draws one to its doors and beyond. In many of the towns, one finds the library to be the central component in the identity of the community in which they are found, and socially they provide a place where people can gather for intellectual interaction and casual forum.

“Given my background in architecture and architectural history, I have discovered a particular fascination in the libraries found in my travels. I usually take numerous photos of the buildings so that a proper study of the details can be made before starting a drawing. Fundamentally stated, the defining appearance and character of any building is the compilation of its vocabulary. Just like working a jigsaw puzzle, I can entertain myself for hours exploring how and why the pieces fit together, and grasping some rationality for that which artistically motivated the designer. As a rendering nears completion, I always feel that I am sharing with the architect an intimate knowledge of their creation, and there is a rewarding sense of satisfaction in that alliance.

“Although the buildings compel an engaging presence to me personally, I hope that these renderings encourage a conscious respect for the buildings which they rightfully deserve, and perhaps perpetuate a renewed awareness of the architectural treasures found in Vermont.”
