“One-off” Book Discussion: Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese

February 6 @ 6:00 pm7:00 pm

One-off Book Discussion

Have you ever gotten to the end of a book and wanted–perhaps needed–to talk about it with someone else who has read it? Norman Williams Public Library is planning occasional “one-off” discussions as books that fit this category come to our attention.

We’ll begin on February 6th with Abraham Verghese’s The Covenant of Water. Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, this novel follows a family in southern India that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning. Described as “a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the hardships undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. Imbued with humour, deep emotion and the essence of life, it is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.” If you have read–or are intending to read–this epic story, please join us!

Though all of the book groups at NWPL welcome readers to attend one or many meetings, these “one-off” gatherings will be book-initiated. Fiction, biography, history, or current events, we are open to all genres and topics. Please let us know if you have a suggestion!

Like our other book discussion groups, this will be held in person and via zoom. Please email programs@normanwilliams.org for the link to join.
