Memorial Day | NWPL Closed
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, is a federal holiday in the United States observed on the last Monday of May to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.
First observed in 1868, the national observance followed many local observances that began at the end of the Civil War. Following World War I, Memorial Day became a day of remembrance for all members of the U.S. Military who fought and died in service. Observance moved to the last Monday in May, and it became universally known as Memorial Day in 1971.
