Pysanky Eggs: Ukrainian Egg Decorating Drop-in Sessions

April 18, 2022 @ 1:00 pm4:00 pm

Pyanky Eggs

Create beautiful decorated eggs and celebrate this Ukrainian tradition! If you know the basic techniques, join us around the table to write eggs together. Danelle Sims will set up a workstation and be available for assistance. These sessions, scheduled for Mondays from 1:00 – 4:00, begin on March 21st. Come by once or for several sessions.

Danelle started practicing this tradition about 25 years ago and fell in love with the process. While happy to help out with questions and procedures, she will not be giving formal instruction.

We’ll provide dyes, candles, spoons, etc. Bring your own eggs if you like – white, brown; chicken, duck, or goose! Donations of eggs and toward other supplies are appreciated.

Appropriate for ages 12 and up because we work with raw eggs and melt wax over an open flame. There is no need to register though space is limited. Please email programs@normanwilliams.org with any questions.

Ukrainian Easter Egg Decorating has been handed down through generations of the Ukrainian people. They are famous the world over for their colorful Easter Eggs (Pysanky). Over 2000 years ago, before the time of Christ, people decorated eggs believing that great powers were embodied in the egg. Eggs symbolized the release of the earth from the shackles of winter and the coming of spring with its promise of new hope, new life and prosperity. With the advent of Christianity, Easter eggs symbolize the Resurrection and a promise of eternal life. Legend has it that as long as pysanky are decorated, goodness will prevail over evil throughout the world. – Excerpt from How to Decorate Beautiful Ukrainian Easter Eggs by Luba Perchyshyn
