For over one hundred forty years the NWPL has lent books and other materials to area residents. Today, the library is a modern facility that respects its cultural, historical, and architectural histories while providing the best of contemporary library services to the greater Woodstock area. Our collection of books and media – both in the building and digital – comprises over 70,000 offerings. Circulation has grown to over 70,000 items loaned, one of the highest figures per capita of all Vermont libraries. If you have any questions about our offerings, please contact the library staff via phone, email, or dropping by. We are happy to help.

Library Catalog

Find our complete holdings, both physical and digital. Feel free to place a hold on any item in this catalog – the holdings of Norman Williams Library as well as the other libraries in our consortium. If you do not find what you are looking for, let us know. We can look further afield through interlibrary loan.

eBooks & eAudiobooks

We have two platforms through which you can download/stream e-books and audiobooks. State-wide Green Mountain Library Consortium (GMLC) content can be accessed through the Libby app. The Palace Project has all the content of GMLC as well as many other titles, some dating back hundreds of years. GMLC titles also appear in our general library catalog search results.

Movies

BBC from Kanopy

Active library cardholders can stream up to five movies per month. More information and details can be found at Kanopy.

Conversations

Norman Williams Public Library hosts a variety of lively, ongoing book discussion groups – something for everybody. The hybrid format offers you the choice of attending in person and/or virtually via zoom.

All groups are open and welcome new participants. Intrigued by the topic, the titles, or books in general? We invite you to join a session–or several!

Please email programs@normanwilliams.org to register. We’ll keep you updated on book selections and links to join online.

    What's On Your Nightstand

If you are a patron interested in borrowing the books selected for discussion, please let us know as soon as possible. We are happy to request copies via interlibrary loan if ours are already checked out. NWPL is a participant in a large consortium of libraries and receives deliveries twice a week. Notably, in FY 2021, the consortium circulated more than 77,000 books, increasing availability to all!

The Yankee Bookshop offers our reading groups a discount! Just let them know which discussion group you are in.

ABLE Library – Visually Impaired Service

Update: The Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped has been renamed the ABLE Library, an acronym that stands for our primary services – Audio, Braille, Large-print, and eBooks. We still offer the same resources to our patrons, but under a more descriptive and contemporary name.

The Vermont Department of Libraries, Special Services Unit is a regional network library of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, providing recorded, large print and braille books , audio-described videos and other materials to qualifying individuals. Applying for these free library services is easy; anyone desiring these services just needs to fill out an application and have it approved by the Special Services Unit. Once approved, the materials are delivered to the individual’s home and may then be returned postage free.

This must be filled out by hand and mailed to Berlin as it requires an original signature by the “Certifying Authority” attesting to the individual’s disability. The document may be downloaded from the Department of Libraries site or by contacting the library. Once on the State site you may look at the available materials via the on line catalog and be referred to other sites of interest.
