From the ED: Colonialists vs. Red Coats on the Mezz

IMG_4392This week I am thrilled to announce that NWPL has been loaned a one-of-a-kind, large-scale Revolutionary War chess set! The colonialist side is represented by blue chess pieces with George and Martha Washington serving as our “King” and “Queen” pieces. The British side has “Red Coats.” Bill Yates, a former 5th grade teacher from South Pomfret, graciously arranged for the set to be loaned to the library to be used by chess enthusiasts of all ages. It is set up on our Mezzanine level. We also wish to thank Rob Hanson, a current South Pomfret 6th grade teacher, who heads up the chess club, for his willingness to loan this unique set to the library. It is our hope that everyone who loves chess will visit the library to see this remarkable set and to make use of it. This is not a museum piece. It is meant to be used. School groups and chess clubs are welcome to contact the library to arrange a match. This is yet another example of the tremendous community spirit that exists here in Woodstock and the surrounding towns
