Masters Of The Skies: Meet and Greet with Mike, the Barred Owl

Mike the Barred Owl

Gregory Wojtera of “Masters Of The Skies” will be present at the library on the front lawn (weather permitting) for an informal meet and greet. People will get a chance to ask questions regarding birds of prey, their ecology and natural history, as well as learn about their unique relationship with humans through the ancient sport of falconry. Mike the Barred Owl will be present, giving everyone a unique chance to approach a nocturnal predator during the daytime.

Mark Greenberg: Kitchen Tunks and Parlor Songs

In the 1980s, Mark Greenberg interviewed and recorded old-time, grassroots Vermont musicians and produced both a video documentary, The Unbroken Circle (1985), and a CD anthology, Kitchen Tunks and Parlor Songs (2003). In this Vermont Humanities Council presentation, he discusses collecting oral histories in Vermont and examines how earlier music survived in the twentieth century and how it was affected by social and technological developments.

Environmental Risk Factors for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Dr. Elijah Stommel, professor of Neurology in the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and director of the ALS Clinical Research Center at DHMC, will discuss his research on environmental risk factors for the neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He has studied the relationship between the waterborne cyanobacteria and ALS extensively.
