Civic & Civil Engagement

Coincidentally, Tuesday, September 20th is the date for the first meeting of a new Community
Debate Club at Norman Williams Public Library and National Voter Registration Day.

Libraries are nonpartisan, but they are not indifferent. As institutions that provide access to
information, resources, programs, and public spaces for all members of a community, libraries
are a cornerstone for civic engagement.

Sparked by an interest in civil discourse, critical thinking, and problem-solving, a Community
Debate Club will meet from 4:30-5:30 pm. In these days of polarized viewpoints and alternative
facts, we’ll explore the persuasive arts of genuine discourse. The group will be guided by an
experienced debate coach and is open to all, high school and older. For more information or to
sign up, please email programs@normanwilliams.org.

Voting is one of the greatest privileges and responsibilities of citizenship in the United States.
Yet, turnout in national elections is consistently lower than two-thirds of eligible voters. We
encourage you to check your voter registration status – especially if you have moved or changed
your name – by visiting Nonprofit Voter (https://linktr.ee/npvnational) and inviting a friend to do
the same! Learn about local deadlines, procedures, ballots, and more at Vote 411 Vermont
(https://www.vote411.org/vermont), a project of the League of Women Voters.
