Artist Statement/Bio
I am an abstract figurative artist based in South Royalton, Vt.. My artwork explores the human experience as told through a female lens. The images in my work often depict women, open, exposed and vulnerable, yet possessing an inner strength and fortitude as illustrated by the strong framework within each piece. Many of the figurative images in my work are like characters in a story. Each one is there to convey a message and evoke a feeling, inspiring the viewer to reflect and connect. My work allows me to explore sensitive situations in a way that provides clarity and establishes a visual narrative that can be shared with others.
I typically work with acrylic paint and graphite on wood panels that are either recycled from previous construction projects, old reclaimed wood found in our barn or birch panels designed specifically to be painted on. I also create figurative wall constructions that utilize a variety of material such as wood, metal, paper, paint and glass. Color plays a significant role while designing every composition. The use of color sets the mood and generates movement within the work. While working on a piece, I aim to break down the surface of the wood into a series of interlocking shapes and lines in order to guide the viewer to use their imagination to complete the image and see what’s not really there.
Prior to moving to Vermont I lived in Brooklyn, NY for many years. During this time I continued to explore my passion for both painting and sculpture while working as an early childhood educator, with both typically developing children and those with developmental delays. Creativity and making art was an integral part of every day both in the classroom and at home in my personal life. The energy, innocence and curiosity of the children I have worked with are abundantly present in my art through the use of bold color fields, playful imagery and the overall vibrancy that the work conveys.
