Six Piece Zentangle Gratitude
Jen Dembinski
mixed media
9” x 9″
NFS
Over the lockdown, my eldest daughter Leah, who lives in Queens, NY, started a learning zoom collaborative with her NYC friends. They invited everyone they knew to offer lessons in watercolor, crafts, music, and readings of Shakespearean plays, you-name-it-they-taught-it.

Painting during this pandemic period has saved my sanity. I have a mind that needs stimulation. With everything I normally do closed down, i.e. health club, movies, art shows, it has been a life saver to paint on a regular basis with two friends. I’m sure I would be depressed if I didn’t have this creative outlet to help me.

I need fun things to look forward to and this period we are living through in the world has made me grateful for things I used to take for granted, like being able to drop by a museum, or visit a gallery, or participate in some of Santa Fe’s fiestas. Painting has given my mind something to focus on in order to keep expanding. It feeds on the stimulation of learning new techniques and the kind and honest critiques I get from other artists.

Money tossed

During the onset of COVID-19, I began to re-think how I would challenge myself to take on painting faces. I had always wanted to draw faces, but felt it would be very difficult to paint them well enough for exhibits. I thank Katie Runde for moving me forward!

Sonja Olson
oil pastel
48″ x 24″
NFS
From the beginning of “lockdown” onward, I have been overwhelmed with feelings of being very small, voiceless, and powerless. I had done these kind of big faces before, during an earlier difficult time, and returned to creating them as a form of self-soothing.
Peering Toward the Unknown

oil pastel
42″ x 30″

Working on these giant expressive faces is very cathartic; a way of manifesting the emotions choking me on the inside. I have a fantasy of taping them, facing outward, onto my windows so the “whole world” can witness my feelings. A bit grandiose, I know.
Bird Gathering Color Block
Maureen Sheldon
mixed media; digital inkjet printing; silk habotai
36” x 36” scarf
$160.00
Over the 25 years living at this property and being an avid gardener, it has turned into a botanical sanctuary. Sometimes, I look in amazement at the accomplishment and in recognition of the effort involved. That effort has been rewarded many times over the years and it would seem this year in particular my gratitude for this space has been foremost on my mind.

While the human population is mired in the C-19 pandemic, we must not forget our place in the balance of all species on the planet, we must do our part to improve the reasons why we are seeing so much loss. We must move forward into new solutions for a cleaner planet. All of these elements are intertwined.
