“Sunflowers for Sydney” is a tribute celebrating Wendy Marrinan’s niece and fellow artist Sydney Therriault (b.1999-d.2021). This show celebrates the beginning of a journey as Wendy continues to learn from her, as an artist, and as a person.

Artist Statement

Inspired by nature absorbed from my surroundings, images emerge as the magic of color and light come together. All of the colors in the spectrum can be seen in everything: I love seeing how various combinations resonate. I delight in the discovery of mixing pigments during my creative process.

Work in mixed media has been my recent focus, starting with an abstract layer of acrylic or watercolor paint on paper, board, or canvas. Once dry, different layers of papers are added using an acrylic medium as the adhesive, responding to the underpainting with a continued abstract approach. Alternating with paint or paper through a series of additional layers, an image or idea emerges by the fourth layer, at which point it feels like “sculpting in two dimensions,” exposing the inventory of images stored in my heart and mind.

My education in art began at an early age; my mother was very creative. Attending high school at the International School of Geneva, Switzerland, exposed me to abundant art courses and the opportunity for extensive travel, graduating in 1975. Love for the Vermont landscape brought me to Middlebury College, Vermont, where I majored in Studio Art, earning a BA in 1979. A 10 year career in picture framing in San Francisco, continued travel, workshops, and exposure to other artists have all helped me continue to grow in my work. Happy to land in Woodstock in 2001, my home studio ArtistinJune opened in 2010.

ArtistinJune is located in the Village of Woodstock, Vermont. Visits can be arranged by appointment only: artistinjune@gmail.com or 802-457-9935.
