“To acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life.” ― W. Somerset Maugham

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to develop a reading habit? Norman Williams Public Library is a good place to start!

Much has been featured in the media lately about silent reading parties – in cafes, pubs, and yes, libraries. Why go out to read when you can read at home? There are a myriad of possible reasons: the quiet if you don’t have a private space, the social aspect of being around like-minded people–even not talking, the incentive to put away phones and other distracting devices, and the discipline of carving out a regular time to enjoy reading. Unlike a traditional book club, no book or format is specified and no discussion expected.

NWPL is experimenting with this model and invites you to join us on Wednesday afternoons at 4 pm beginning January 17 for an hour of silent reading in front of the fireplace. Tea, coffee, and cookies will be provided.

Our gatherings will offer a structure to carve time out of busy schedules for focused reading. Allow yourself to step away from demanding projects at home or work. Bring the book you started last month or explore writings outside of your usual reading genre. Maybe you will be drawn into a great story and return to it later in the week.

There will be time after the hour for visiting and talking about your reading if you wish, but it is totally optional! Everyone is welcome! We hope you will join us to foster your reading habit.
