Ghost Night at the Movies! With Host Rick Winston

October 28, 2021 @ 7:00 pm8:00 pm

GHOSTS AND THE SUPERNATURAL – The depiction of the paranormal can be portrayed for straight chills (“The Other,” and “The Haunting”), romantic drama (“The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”), and lively comedy (“Blithe Spirit”). Our host and film afficionado, Rick Winston, will sample a wide variety of such films, both from Hollywood and other countries including, Japan (“Spirited Away” and “Kwaidan”), Spain (“The Orphanage”), England (“Dead of Night”) and Mexico (“The Devil’s Backbone”). This is a great opportunity to watch unusual “ghost” stories with a knowledgeable and fun guide! What a way to get ready for Halloween!

This is a ZOOM event with limited seating for 20 people. Email here to sign up and we will confirm your seat.

ABOUT OUR HOST: RICK WINSTON
Rick Winston was the co-owner of Montpelier’s Savoy Theater for 29 years, and was Programming Director for the Green Mountain Film Festival for 14 years. He has taught film history at Burlington College, Community College of Vermont, Goddard College, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and has made presentations throughout Vermont on film history.

“I grew up in Yonkers, New York, and became hooked watching old films on TV at a young age. I went to Columbia College and University of California, Berkeley, where there were many opportunities to catch up on films while putting off writing English Literature papers. I moved to Vermont in 1970 and shortly afterward founded the Lightning Ridge Film Society, which morphed into the Savoy Theater in 1981. I was one of the founders of Montpelier’s Green Mountain Film Festival  and was its Programming Director until 2012. At the festival, I also instituted a featured interview with a nationally-known film writer; the critics and historians that I interviewed were Phillip Lopate, Stuart Klawans, Molly Haskell, Kenneth Turan, Kathleen Carroll, Matthew Hays, Jeanine Basinger, Godfrey Cheshire, and Peter Rainer. My wife Andrea Serota and I sold the Savoy in 2009, and since then, I have been teaching film at Burlington College, Community College of Vermont (Montpelier), and the Montpelier Senior Activity Center, while speaking on film subjects for the Vermont Humanities Council. Some of my other interests and projects include historical research on Vermont During the McCarthy Era, and constructing twice-monthly “double crostic” puzzles for the Times Argus/Rutland Herald.” – Rick Winston
