SUMMARY:Summer Reading Program | Unearth a Story
DESCRIPTION:When the academic year winds down\, we shift our attention from after-school activities to the Summer Reading Program. This year\, the theme is “Unearth a Story” and we have plans for lots of fun! \nThe official program runs for six weeks\, from June 27 to August 8\, but you can pick up your reading log in early June so you are all set to earn stickers for reading time. Turn in your log with stickers for fun books and other prizes. \n+++ \nOn Friday\, June 26 at 7 pm\, we’ll kick off the program with a special Family Movie Night screening of A Night at the Museum. \nNatural history exhibits come alive after the museum closes for the night because of an ancient curse. (details & trailer) \n  \n+++ \nThree special Saturday Story Times will be followed by creative activities! Stories start at 10:30\, and the crafts begin just after 11. Come for either or both. \n\nJune 27: Archaeology & Cave Painting – draw your own cave art on large sheets of paper\nJuly 18: Read & Decorate: Pet Rocks – design and paint a smooth stone\nAugust 8: Nature Stories & Collage – create a collage with found objects in nature\n\n+++ \nPart of our exploration of all things buried in the earth is the installation of a raised garden bed on the lawn between the courthouse and the library. \nA young crew planted seed potatoes in late May. We will observe their growth along with other edibles and flowers. Our harvest may coincide with the celebration at the end of summer. \n  \nHelp us unearth stories\, treasures\, vegetables\, bones\, who knows what else! Stop by the Children’s Room for details. \n+++ \nAs always\, the program is free\, and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:Poetry Group
DESCRIPTION:Writing poetry is a solitary endeavor. Are you looking for feedback on your poems? You are invited to join the Poetry Group at NWPL for sharing and critique. We meet weekly on Mondays 4 pm for about an hour and a half.* \nWhat does it mean to critique something? According to the Oxford Dictionary\, “noun: critique: a detailed analysis and assessment of something\, especially a literary\, philosophical\, or political theory.” \nSince “critique” has negative connotations\, we operate in workshop format. How? Billy Collins suggested “5 Things to Consider When Analyzing Poetry in an online ‘MasterClass.’” \n“Poetry involves different elements like language\, rhythm\, and structure. Together\, they tell a story and create a complexity that is unique to poetic verse. When studying poems in-depth\, look at these individual elements: \n\nTheme: Poetry often conveys a message through figurative language. The central idea and the subject matter can reveal the underlying theme of a poem.\nLanguage: From word choice to imagery\, language creates the mood and tone of a poem. The way language is arranged also impacts the rhythm of a poem.\nSound and rhythm: The syllabic patterns and stresses create the metrical pattern of a poem.\nStructure: The framework of a poem’s structure affects how it is meant to be read. A poet sculpts their story around stanzas\, line breaks\, rhyme patterns\, punctuation\, and pauses.\nContext: The who\, what\, where\, when\, and why of a poem can help explain its purpose. Look at these elements to discover the context of a poem.”\n\nThis group is open to all; RSVP is appreciated. Please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org. \n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Catherine Tudish & Brett Ann Stanciu
DESCRIPTION:Catherine Tudish and Brett Ann Stanciu both have new novels set in small-town Vermont. Yankee Bookshop and NWPL are excited to welcome them to Woodstock to talk about A Thousand Souls\, Call It Madness\, writing\, life in our rural state\, and more! \n+++ \nCatherine Tudish’s A Thousand Souls: A Novel in Stories interweaves the lives of three generations in this rural Vermont town of “upward of a thousand souls.” \nA boy born of a secret affair meets his father. A recent widow and Boston transplant solves the mystery of a teen girl gone missing. A beloved sheriff breaks up a drug operation\, only to get busted himself for helping undocumented workers evade ICE. The disappointed wife of a rural mail driver presents him with a nude portrait – of herself. A shy girl befriends a black bear… People unknown\, yet familiar. \nCatherine Tudish is the author of the story collection Tenney’s Landing and the novel American Cream. She has taught writing and literature at Harvard University\, Dartmouth College\, and the Bread Loaf School of English. She lives in a village in central Vermont\, where she teaches a community writing workshop at the local library and serves as one of the town’s three Fence Viewers. \n+++ \nBrett Ann Stanciu’s Call It Madness unfolds in the immensity of a frozen Vermont winter\, where buried truths rise and endings refuse to follow the script. \nMillennial Avah Lavoie’ s crumbling relationship is the final push she needs to answer her estranged mother’ s unexpected call: her great-grandfather Opa has died. Driving north to rural Vermont\, Avah hopes to untangle the murky history of a family she barely knows. Rumors swirl— about a long-lost farm\, a sawmill accident\, and Opa’ s drinking…. \nBrett Ann Stanciu is the author of Unstitched: My Journey to Understand Opioid Addition and How Communities Can Heal and Hidden View. Recipient of a 2020 Vermont Arts Council Creation Grant and a 2024 Fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center for the Arts\, Stanciu lives in Hardwick\, Vermont\, in a century-old house built for granite workers and surrounded by lilacs.

SUMMARY:What’s On Your Nightstand? | Book Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:This is NOT your usual Book Club! There is no assigned reading…. We chat about books you’re currently reading\, books you’ve loved\, and the books you’ve always wanted to read. \nAlong with great recommendations\, our discussions have ranged from the design and appeal of book jackets\, the ebook revolution\, listening to audiobooks\, which books we reread and why\, and the craft of writing. \nLibrarian Kathy Beaird has led this monthly gathering for over a decade. Everyone comes away energized and eager for more. Drop-ins welcome! \nFor annotated lists of participants’ past book recommendations\, please visit the Book Discussion Group page. \nEmail Programs@NormanWilliams.org with questions or the link to join via Zoom if you can’t make it in person.

SUMMARY:Read\, Cook\, Eat! | Cookbook Club
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to read about cooking\, experiment with recipes\, share stories about food with others\, and eat good food? If so\, we invite you to join Read\, Cook\, Eat!\, a cookbook discussion group. We meet at the library monthly on the 3rd Tuesday at 6 pm to share our creations.* \nNewcomers are always welcome; you don’t need kitchen credentials to join! Please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org to register – not required but it helps us figure out how to set up the tables and chairs. And we’ll keep you updated on the books selected\, or visit the Book Discussion Group page for current and past book or topic selections. \nImportant Details \n\nCookbooks & Recipes – We will hold a copy of the cookbook at the circulation desk for you to browse and pick out recipes you might wish to try. We’ll copy them at no charge (or you can take a photo with your phone). A second copy of the cookbook will be available to borrow for 3 days during the month leading up to the meeting.\nQuantity & Balance – This is a true potluck affair! There may be 3 desserts and 4 vegetable dishes or an appetizer and 5 different main dishes… Since recipe yields vary widely\, there is no set amount of food to bring. The goal is to discover new combinations of ingredients and flavors.\nEquipment & Utensils – While the library has a microwave and stove for reheating\, the kitchen is very small so preparation and cooking should be done before the meeting. For sustainability reasons\, we encourage everyone to bring their own place settings and utensils\, including serving spoons. We have a supply of disposable plates and utensils on hand.\nIngredients & Allergens – The food will be cooked in home kitchens; food may contain or come into contact with common allergens. The library cannot guarantee the ingredients or preparation of any dish served at this program. We encourage everyone to bring the recipe they used noting any ingredient substitution\, especially if it is a common allergen.\n\n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.
