SUMMARY:Read\, Cook\, Eat! | Cookbook Club
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to read about cooking\, experiment with recipes\, share stories about food with others\, and eat good food? If so\, we invite you to join Read\, Cook\, Eat!\, a cookbook discussion group. We meet at the library monthly on the 3rd Tuesday at 6 pm to share our creations.* \nNewcomers are always welcome; you don’t need kitchen credentials to join! Please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org to register – not required but it helps us figure out how to set up the tables and chairs. And we’ll keep you updated on the books selected\, or visit the Book Discussion Group page for current and past book or topic selections. \nImportant Details \n\nCookbooks & Recipes – We will hold a copy of the cookbook at the circulation desk for you to browse and pick out recipes you might wish to try. We’ll copy them at no charge (or you can take a photo with your phone). A second copy of the cookbook will be available to borrow for 3 days during the month leading up to the meeting.\nQuantity & Balance – This is a true potluck affair! There may be 3 desserts and 4 vegetable dishes or an appetizer and 5 different main dishes… Since recipe yields vary widely\, there is no set amount of food to bring. The goal is to discover new combinations of ingredients and flavors.\nEquipment & Utensils – While the library has a microwave and stove for reheating\, the kitchen is very small so preparation and cooking should be done before the meeting. For sustainability reasons\, we encourage everyone to bring their own place settings and utensils\, including serving spoons. We have a supply of disposable plates and utensils on hand.\nIngredients & Allergens – The food will be cooked in home kitchens; food may contain or come into contact with common allergens. The library cannot guarantee the ingredients or preparation of any dish served at this program. We encourage everyone to bring the recipe they used noting any ingredient substitution\, especially if it is a common allergen.\n\n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.

SUMMARY:Interplay Jazz Jam Session | Library After Hours
DESCRIPTION:Musicians and listeners alike are invited to attend and enjoy this Interplay Jazz Jam Session on the Mezzanine with its great acoustics and baby grand piano. \nThese jam sessions are a social gathering and a communal practice session. Starting at 6 pm\, instrumentalists participate in free-flow tunes to develop new material and play together. Continuing at 7\, singers may wish to join in. Bring well-known jazz standards\, popular songs or an original tune to play with the instrumentalists along with 6-8 copies of the sheet music of the songs you wish to play. Jam session ends at 9 pm. \nFounded in 1996 by local musicians Fred Haas and Sabrina Brown\, Interplay Jazz & Arts has been inspiring musicians of all ages from around the world. People often ask\, “What is a jam session?” A jam session is a relatively informal musical event at which musicians\, typically instrumentalists\, play improvised solos and vamp on tunes\, songs and chord progressions. To “jam” is to improvise music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements\, except for when the group is playing well-known jazz standards or covers of existing popular songs. \nYou are invited to bring an offering of food or drink to share if you’d like.

SUMMARY:Woodstock Repair Café
DESCRIPTION:A Repair Café is a free community event where neighbors bring in broken\, worn\, or beloved-but-well-used items and skilled volunteers help repair and restore them\, keeping still-usable items out of landfills. Think small appliances\, clothing repairs\, furniture fixes\, bicycle tune-ups\, sharpening\, soldering\, you name it. If it’s busted\, we’ll try to help you fix it. \nThis first Woodstock Repair Café is being organized by The Bunny Bin\, Sustainable Woodstock\, and Norman Williams Public Library. With your help\, we can empower people to make small fixes themselves\, save items that might otherwise end up in a landfill\, and build connections along the way. Join your friends and neighbors – there will be activities for the whole family! \nTo get involved\, share a skill or sponsor the event\, please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org or fill out this INTEREST FORM\, and we’ll follow up with details. \nVolunteer to fix things:\nWe invite local volunteers to launch Woodstock’s first-ever Repair Café\, and we’re looking for the fixers\, tinkerers\, menders\, and makers in our community to help bring it to life. \nBecause we live in both a trades desert and an aging community\, many of our neighbors have small repairs piling up at home. If you are a professional\, volunteer and bring your business cards\, show off what you know\, and make real connections with people who might need your skills now or down the road. \nWe’re looking for volunteers with skills in: \n\nSewing\, mending & alterations\nStain removal & fabric rescue\nCobbling & leather repair\nElectronics & small appliances\nComputer experts\nWoodworking\, furniture & creative repurposing\nBicycles\, clocks & other mechanical devices\nKnife & tool sharpening\nJewelry\nGeneral “I’ll figure it out” energy\n\nBring things to be fixed:\nOur goal is to help you mend small appliances\, clothing\, furniture\, you name it\, at no charge to you. \nA few guidelines: \n\nBring your own parts – plugs\, wires\, bolts\, buttons\, table legs\, etc.\nOne item per person per station.\nTo keep things manageable: if you can’t carry it\, please don’t bring it!\nOut of respect for our volunteers\, please be sure your item isn’t musty or excessively dirty.\n\nNo appointment is needed; you can sign up for repairs at each station. We ask that you fill out this INTEREST FORM to help us plan. \nNote: By bringing an item\, you agree that Norman Williams Public Library\, The Bunny Bin\, Sustainable Woodstock\, and our volunteers assume no liability for injury\, damage\, loss\, or unsuccessful repair. All repairs are best-effort\, as-is.

SUMMARY:Poetry Group
DESCRIPTION:Writing poetry is a solitary endeavor. Are you looking for feedback on your poems? You are invited to join the Poetry Group at NWPL for sharing and critique. We meet weekly on Mondays 4 pm for about an hour and a half.* \nWhat does it mean to critique something? According to the Oxford Dictionary\, “noun: critique: a detailed analysis and assessment of something\, especially a literary\, philosophical\, or political theory.” \nSince “critique” has negative connotations\, we operate in workshop format. How? Billy Collins suggested “5 Things to Consider When Analyzing Poetry in an online ‘MasterClass.’” \n“Poetry involves different elements like language\, rhythm\, and structure. Together\, they tell a story and create a complexity that is unique to poetic verse. When studying poems in-depth\, look at these individual elements: \n\nTheme: Poetry often conveys a message through figurative language. The central idea and the subject matter can reveal the underlying theme of a poem.\nLanguage: From word choice to imagery\, language creates the mood and tone of a poem. The way language is arranged also impacts the rhythm of a poem.\nSound and rhythm: The syllabic patterns and stresses create the metrical pattern of a poem.\nStructure: The framework of a poem’s structure affects how it is meant to be read. A poet sculpts their story around stanzas\, line breaks\, rhyme patterns\, punctuation\, and pauses.\nContext: The who\, what\, where\, when\, and why of a poem can help explain its purpose. Look at these elements to discover the context of a poem.”\n\nThis group is open to all; RSVP is appreciated. Please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org. \n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.
