SUMMARY:Literary Pairs | Book Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Intrigued by how books relate to each other? A single topic can be explored from different viewpoints; a literary trope – such as retelling a classic story – can result in different endings; a shared plot might highlight divergent experiences. \nBecause there are two books to read for each meeting\, this group usually meets quarterly on the 1st Wednesday of February\, May\, August\, and November\, at 1 pm.* Dessert will be provided! \nLibrarians Kathy Beaird and Lori Mitchell have teamed up to host this discussion of book pairings. Kathy has been in the book business all her adult life and loved every minute of it. Lori has been connecting readers and books for many years\, including a decade here at NWPL. \nEveryone is welcome! If the chosen topic or the titles pique your curiosity\, please join us. Email Programs@NormanWilliams.org if you wish to join remotely. You can view the current theme and title selection on our Book Discussion Group page. \n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.

SUMMARY:Emily Franklin | Love & Other Monsters.
DESCRIPTION:The NWPL and Yankee Bookshop welcome Emily Franklin to talk about her newest novel\, Love & Other Monsters. \nIn the stormy\, scandalous summer of 1816\, daring eighteen-year-old Claire Clairmont changed the course of literature forever. But then — unlike her stepsister Mary Shelley — she was forgotten\, until now. With searing relevance to our here and now — of celebrity worship\, climate disaster\, of complicated femininity\, Love & Other Monsters is the untold origin story of Frankenstein\, a feminist reckoning of sisters\, survival\, and the creation of monsters — both those on the page and those who walk among us. \nEmily Franklin is the bestselling author of more than twenty books\, including a poetry collection\, Tell Me How You Got Here. Her work has been published in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Kenyon Review\, and The Journal of the American Medical Association\, read aloud on National Public Radio\, named notable by the Association of Jewish Libraries\, and longlisted for the London Sunday Times Short Story Award. Her novel The Lioness of Boston\, based on the life of trailblazer Isabella Stewart Gardner\, is in its tenth printing. \nYankee Bookshop will be on hand with copies of Love & Other Monsters.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day | NWPL Closed
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Day\, originally known as Armistice Day\, is observed annually on November 11th. It is a holiday honoring the men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces. \nThe November date is important because in 1918\, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month\, major hostilities of World War I formally ended when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. \n*** \nWhen the library is closed\, patrons can use our online catalog to renew books\, and place books on hold in addition to accessing eBooks\, eAudiobooks\, and movies to download and stream.

SUMMARY:Michael J. Caduto | The Day the Pond Flew South
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning writer and educator Michael J. Caduto will read his new picture book\, The Day the Pond Flew South. It tells the story of Loon\, who lands on a small pond from which there is no escape\, though her friends try everything they can to help her fly away. As winter sets in and the pond begins to freeze\, the birds invent an ingenious plan that will take every single wingbeat to save their friend. \nAfter reading the book\, the author will share a Tsimshian tale from Alaska about a loon that restores a blind man’s sight and is rewarded with the gift of its beautiful necklace. Participants may create their own “loon’s necklace” of string and beads to symbolize their relationship with this remarkable bird. \nCo-hosted by Yankee Bookshop; books will be available for purchase and signing.

SUMMARY:Poetry Group
DESCRIPTION:Writing poetry is a solitary endeavor. Are you looking for feedback on your poems? You are invited to join the Poetry Group at NWPL for sharing and critique. We meet weekly on Mondays 4 pm for about an hour and a half.* \nWhat does it mean to critique something? According to the Oxford Dictionary\, “noun: critique: a detailed analysis and assessment of something\, especially a literary\, philosophical\, or political theory.” \nSince “critique” has negative connotations\, we operate in workshop format. How? Billy Collins suggested “5 Things to Consider When Analyzing Poetry in an online ‘MasterClass.’” \n“Poetry involves different elements like language\, rhythm\, and structure. Together\, they tell a story and create a complexity that is unique to poetic verse. When studying poems in-depth\, look at these individual elements: \n\nTheme: Poetry often conveys a message through figurative language. The central idea and the subject matter can reveal the underlying theme of a poem.\nLanguage: From word choice to imagery\, language creates the mood and tone of a poem. The way language is arranged also impacts the rhythm of a poem.\nSound and rhythm: The syllabic patterns and stresses create the metrical pattern of a poem.\nStructure: The framework of a poem’s structure affects how it is meant to be read. A poet sculpts their story around stanzas\, line breaks\, rhyme patterns\, punctuation\, and pauses.\nContext: The who\, what\, where\, when\, and why of a poem can help explain its purpose. Look at these elements to discover the context of a poem.”\n\nThis group is open to all; RSVP is appreciated. Please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org. \n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.

SUMMARY:Read\, Cook\, Eat! | Cookbook Club
DESCRIPTION:Do you like to read about cooking\, experiment with recipes\, share stories about food with others\, and eat good food? If so\, we invite you to join Read\, Cook\, Eat!\, a cookbook discussion group. We meet at the library monthly on the 3rd Tuesday at 6 pm to share our creations.* \nNewcomers are always welcome; you don’t need kitchen credentials to join! Please email Programs@NormanWilliams.org to register – not required but it helps us figure out how to set up the tables and chairs. And we’ll keep you updated on the books selected\, or visit the Book Discussion Group page for current and past book or topic selections. \nImportant Details \n\nCookbooks & Recipes – We will hold a copy of the cookbook at the circulation desk for you to browse and pick out recipes you might wish to try. We’ll copy them at no charge (or you can take a photo with your phone). A second copy of the cookbook will be available to borrow for 3 days during the month leading up to the meeting.\nQuantity & Balance – This is a true potluck affair! There may be 3 desserts and 4 vegetable dishes or an appetizer and 5 different main dishes… Since recipe yields vary widely\, there is no set amount of food to bring. The goal is to discover new combinations of ingredients and flavors.\nEquipment & Utensils – While the library has a microwave and stove for reheating\, the kitchen is very small so preparation and cooking should be done before the meeting. For sustainability reasons\, we encourage everyone to bring their own place settings and utensils\, including serving spoons. We have a supply of disposable plates and utensils on hand.\nIngredients & Allergens – The food will be cooked in home kitchens; food may contain or come into contact with common allergens. The library cannot guarantee the ingredients or preparation of any dish served at this program. We encourage everyone to bring the recipe they used noting any ingredient substitution\, especially if it is a common allergen.\n\n* Any changes to the schedule will be noted on the website calendar.
