SUMMARY:Interplay Jazz Jam Session | Library After Hours
DESCRIPTION:Musicians and listeners alike are invited to attend and enjoy this Interplay Jazz Jam Session on the Mezzanine with its great acoustics and baby grand piano. \nThese jam sessions are a social gathering and a communal practice session. Starting at 6:30 pm\, instrumentalists participate in free-flow tunes to develop new material and play together. Continuing at 7:30\, singers may wish to join in. Bring well-known jazz standards\, popular songs or an original tune to play with the instrumentalists along with 6-8 copies of the sheet music of the songs you wish to play. Jam session ends at 9:30 pm. \nFounded in 1996 by local musicians Fred Haas and Sabrina Brown\, Interplay Jazz & Arts has been inspiring musicians of all ages from around the world. People often ask\, “What is a jam session?” A jam session is a relatively informal musical event at which musicians\, typically instrumentalists\, play improvised solos and vamp on tunes\, songs and chord progressions. To “jam” is to improvise music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements\, except for when the group is playing well-known jazz standards or covers of existing popular songs. \nYou are invited to bring an offering of food or drink to share if you’d like.

SUMMARY:Julia Cooke | Starry and Restless - in conversation with Jeff Sharlet
DESCRIPTION:The Norman Williams Public Library and Yankee Bookshop are pleased to launch Starry and Restless: Three Women Who Changed Work\, Writing\, and the World\, the third book by local author Julia Cooke. \nStarry and Restless is a page-turning story of Rebecca West\, Emily “Mickey” Hahn\, and Martha Gellhorn\, three reporters whose curiosity\, grit\, and ambition expanded the possibilities for women and meaningful work. The writer will discuss the ways these pioneering women changed how we see the world and the role of journalism with Jeff Sharlet\, Professor of Creative Non-fiction at Dartmouth College and the author of numerous award-winning essays and books. \n+++ \nWest\, Hahn\, and Gellhorn reported from the Congo\, the American South\, Cuba\, the lively salons of Shanghai\, Yugoslavia on the brink of World War II\, the shot-riddled streets of Spain\, Hong Kong under Japanese occupation\, Germany and Italy at war\, post-Blitz London\, McCarthy-era Mexico\, and beyond. These women didn’t just bear witness to the great changes of the twentieth century; they didn’t just write the backstory to wars that roused their readers to support; they transformed the very world they were describing\, and the way it was understood. \nEach writer traversed the globe\, searching for stories they would then dispatch to The New Yorker\, The Times (London)\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Atlantic Monthly\, Collier’s\, and Vogue. They often traveled alone\, sometimes teaming up with other women reporters\, sometimes with their husbands along for the ride. They sneaked onto the front lines when they were forbidden\, and interviewed civilians to gather color and detail. They wrote novels to pay the bills and articles to explain the world to itself. Over the course of their intertwining lives\, they became mothers and friends\, and took joy in each other’s successes. \n+++ \nJulia Cooke is the author of the books Come Fly the World\, a Goodreads Choice Awards finalist and a Malala’s Book Club pick\, and The Other Side of Paradise: Life in the New Cuba\, a collection of vignettes covering the daily lives of Cubans. Her reporting has been published in Condé Nast Traveler\, The New York Times\, Playboy\, The Village Voice\, and more. Her essays have been published in Salon\, The Threepenny Review\, Smithsonian\, Tin House\, and Virginia Quarterly Review\, where she is a contributing editor. Her work has been anthologized in various iterations of Best American Essays and Best American Travel Writing among other publications. \nJeff Sharlet is the author or editor of eight books\, most recently The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War\, a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist for Nonfiction\, one of The New York Times 100 Books of the Year\, and a New Republic book of the year. His other books include This Brilliant Darkness: A Book of Strangers\, Sweet Heaven When I Die\, C Street\, The Family – (the basis for the 2019 Netflix documentary series)\, Killing the Buddha; and two edited volumes. He has received numerous awards and fellowships. Sharlet is an editor-at-large for VQR\, and is or has been a contributing editor for Vanity Fair\, Harper’s and Rolling Stone\, and a contributor to publications including The New York Times Magazine\, GQ\, Esquire\, and Mother Jones.

SUMMARY:Lyn Swett Miller | Mezzanine Gallery Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Meet photographer Lyn Swett Miller and enjoy her exhibition\, “Meandering Mold: Messages from a Garden Library\,” at a special reception in the Mezzanine Gallery. \nLyn Swett Miller is a micro-climate photographer living in Quechee\, Vermont. For more than a decade\, compost has been her muse for photography and metaphor for everything. Objects\, like a vintage Shakespeare\, her mother-in-law’s thesaurus\, and her Harvard diploma\, found new meaning when mixed with food scraps\, inspiring questions about not just food waste and consumption\, but also about privilege and the power of narrative. Recent work includes “Lebanon Landfill – An Intimate Portrait\,” “Meandering Mold: Messages from a Garden Library\,” and 13 Tons of Love\, a weekly newsletter on Substack. Lyn is an active member of the Kinship Photography Collective. \nArtist Statement \n“Saturated pages congeal\, micro-organisms find a home\, and poetry presents itself. Welcome to my Garden Library\, a living laboratory where\, for two years\, groups of books slowly decomposed between logs\, offering stage ‘sets’ for ephemeral fungi and meandering mold. \n“When I first brought books to this once-forgotten part of the garden\, I was grieving the deaths of my brother-in-law and mother. I’d recently cleared out a collection of art history texts\, but there were too many for the compost pile\, where I’ve often integrated old books. Longing for solace from the land\, something no book could provide\, I wondered what the earth might create when she interacted with these tomes. \n“My intention was to document these objects for years as they “melted” into the earth. Instead\, we decided to move\, so I cleaned that part of the garden. This collection reveals what I found. After many moons\, the earth had embraced the books\, filling their pages with entirely new kinds of art. The images offer messages from the future and the past converging within these old reference books. This work invites conversation on the meaning of mark-making and narrative as well as on earth’s regenerative\, transformational\, and renewing power.”

SUMMARY:Create a Found Poem for National Poetry Month
DESCRIPTION:April is National Poetry Month and once again\, NWPL has a small station set up for anyone to stop by and create a “Found” poem. Also known as a “Redacted” or “Blackout” poems\, these are created by removing words from an existing printed page — any newspaper\, magazine\, or book page will work. Select words or phrases by masking others with a marker or crayon to create a poem. Your new creation may echo the original text\, posit an opposing theme\, or not relate at all. \nPlay with words and phrases. Change your mind. Add a drawing. Make it rhyme or not\, long or short\, serious or funny. It’s your poem! We have newspapers and pages from damaged donations for you to experiment with. If you wish to share your Pruned Poems\, we will display them by the big clock on the first floor and in the window of the children’s room. \nThis kind of found poetry goes back over 250 years to Benjamin Franklin’s neighbor\, Caleb Whiteford\, who redacted words and phrases in newspapers to create puns which he published. More recently it was popularized by Austin Kleon who turned to words on a newspaper page when facing writer’s block. \nPoets of all ages might find inspiration to construct a found poem through deconstruction of another’s text.

SUMMARY:“A New Nation\, Conceived in Liberty…”: Enlightenment Idealism and the Reality of the Modern World | Ron Miller
DESCRIPTION:Part one of “250 Years: Looking Back & Looking Ahead\,” a four-part lecture series at Norman Williams Public Library co-hosted by Woodstock History Center in collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council. \n+++ \nThe United States is a paradoxical nation\, established in a burst of idealism that has inspired generations of Americans\, yet weighed down by oppressive cultural legacies that stubbornly persist. In 1776\, giving voice to Enlightenment faith in reason\, progress\, and the “rights of man\,” Thomas Paine asserted\, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again\,” and the Declaration of Independence seemed to represent a fresh start for humanity. But old prejudices\, old power structures\, and old flaws of human nature remained unvanquished\, and up to our own time they have effectively limited the revolutionary potential of the Declaration. The struggles of the past twelve score and ten years suggest that the power of Enlightenment idealism is considerably more modest than Paine\, Jefferson\, and their fellow revolutionaries wanted to believe. \nRon Miller of South Burlington has been an educational scholar and activist\, teacher\, publisher and bookseller\, community leader\, and philanthropist. He received a Ph.D. from Boston University in American Studies. He has authored several books\, and has founded\, published\, or edited several magazines. He has taught at Goddard College and Champlain College\, and helped establish the Bellwether School in Williston. From 2014 to 2021\, he ran the Learning Lab in Woodstock\, where he taught American history and other topics. He is a past president of the Norman Williams Public Library and has served on several other nonprofit boards.

SUMMARY:Ira Allen and the Green Mountain Frontier | Kevin Graffagnino
DESCRIPTION:Part two of “250 Years: Looking Back & Looking Ahead\,” a four-part lecture series at Norman Williams Public Library co-hosted by Woodstock History Center in collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council. \n+++ \nLand speculator\, revolutionary\, pamphleteer\, politician\, and empire builder\, Ira Allen was a key figure on the Green Mountain frontier. Allen helped create and sustain the independent State of Vermont; held such important state offices as treasurer\, surveyor general\, and member of the Governor’s Council; published hundreds of pages defending Vermont against a host of internal and external enemies; and represented Vermont in negotiations with the British Empire\, other American states\, and Congress. \nJ. Kevin Graffagnino is author/editor of 17 books on Vermont history\, including The Shaping of Vermont\, Vermont in the Victorian Age\, and Vermont Heritage: Essays on Green Mountain History\, 1779-1920. His most recent books are Ira Allen: A Biography and Vermontiana: An Annotated Checklist\, 1764-1899\, both of which came out in 2024. SUMMARY:The Great Contradiction: The Tragic Side of the American Founding | Joseph J. Ellis
DESCRIPTION:Part three of “250 Years: Looking Back & Looking Ahead\,” a four-part lecture series at Norman Williams Public Library co-hosted by Woodstock History Center in collaboration with Yankee Bookshop. \n+++ \nOn the eve of the American Revolution\, half a million enslaved African Americans were embedded in the North American population. The slave trade was flourishing\, even as the thirteen colonies armed themselves to defend against the idea of being governed without consent. This paradox gave birth to what Joseph J. Ellis calls the “great contradiction”: How could a government that had been justified and founded on the principles articulated in the Declaration of Independence institutionalize slavery? How could it permit a tidal wave of western migration by settlers who understood the phrase “pursuit of happiness” to mean the pursuit of Indian lands? \nJoseph J. Ellis is the author of many works of American history\, including Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation\, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize\, and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson\, which won the National Book Award. A frequent contributor to Ken Burns’ celebrated films\, Ellis is featured in The American Revolution\, airing on PBS. Ellis’ essays and book reviews appear regularly in national publications and his commentaries have been featured on major programs. He lives in Vermont with his family. \nThe Yankee Bookshop will have copies of Ellis’s new book\, The Great Contradiction\, available for purchase and signing. \n

The music will be interspersed with poetry readings\, combining the universality of choral music with the intimacy of poetry to reflect on our shared experience of loss and comfort. \nMusical selections include the Funeral Hymn by Gustav Holst\, based on an ancient Hindu text\, Ludwig van Beethoven’s consoling Elegiac Song\, the setting of an Ancient Greek invocation to the rulers of the Underworld by Felix Mendelssohn\, and Pete Seeger’s humane meditation on the approach of death. In addition\, the concert will include works arising directly from the pandemic: Argentine composer Ana Leira Carnero’s moving lament for health-care workers\, a set of madrigals inspired by Covid isolation by Brian Banks\, and a specially commissioned work by Burlington composer Don Jamison and Vermont poet Abigail Carroll. \nFounded by legendary choral director and arranger Robert De Cormier in 2000\, Counterpoint is dedicated to performing choral chamber music and engaging with student musicians in Vermont and beyond. Praised for “clarity\, skill” and “sophisticated musical expressiveness\,” they present concerts throughout New England and beyond and have released 11 CDs. \nPlease join us for this special concert and poetry reading reflecting on the past five years.

SUMMARY:The Great Bennington Battle and Vermont | Howard Coffin
DESCRIPTION:Part four of “250 Years: Looking Back & Looking Ahead\,” a four-part lecture series at Norman Williams Public Library co-hosted by Woodstock History Center in collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council. \n+++ \nThe surrender at Saratoga of a British army under John Burgoyne\, now almost 250 years ago\, has long been called the decisive battle of the American Revolution. But perhaps Burgoyne was doomed after the Battle of Bennington\, a bloody day of fighting along the Vermont border that happened two months before Saratoga? Historian Howard Coffin discusses the history-changing Burgoyne campaign\, focusing on the dramatic battle of “Great Bennington\,” which was a Vermont battle as well as a New York battle. He also reviews heroes John Stark and Seth Warner\, and the Vermont Constitution\, itself about to turn 250 years old. \nA seventh-generation Vermonter\, Howard Coffin is a former press secretary to U.S. Senator Jim Jeffords. He is the author of four books on the Civil War: Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today’s Vermont; Full Duty: Vermonters in the Civil War; Nine Months to Gettysburg; and The Battered Stars\, as well as Guns Over the Champlain Valley\, a book on military sites along the Champlain Corridor.

SUMMARY:“One-off” Book Discussion | The Light Pirate | Vermont Reads
DESCRIPTION:The Vermont Humanities’ current Vermont Reads selection is The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton. We have chosen this novel for our next “One-off” discussion to be facilitated by Alan Berolzheimer. \nNamed after a catastrophic storm\, Wanda is born into a world that’s rapidly changing. Rising sea levels and devastating weather patterns transform her coastal Florida town. As she moves from childhood to adulthood\, Wanda adapts to this remade landscape\, finding adventure\, love\, and purpose in a place largely abandoned by civilization. \nTold in four parts – power\, water\, light\, and time – this novel is a meditation on the beauty and violence of an untamable wilderness. It considers the dissolution of the human-made world\, and helps us see how human connection\, adaptability\, and a little bit of magic might guide us to a new future. \n+++ \nAlan Berolzheimer has directed the book publishing program of the Vermont Historical Society since 1998. Alan is also the project historian and assistant director of The Flow of History\, a Teaching American History program providing professional development activities to Vermont teachers. He received a Ph.D. in 20th-century U.S. History from the University of Virginia in 1996 and lives in Norwich.

SUMMARY:Stephen Kiernan | Pollock's Last Lover: A Novel of Art and Deception
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate the publication of a new novel by Stephen P. Kiernan\, Pollock’s Last Lover: A Novel of Art and Deception. Co-hosted by the Yankee Bookshop\, this event will be a conversation between the writer and M.T. (Tobin) Anderson\, an award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction for all ages. \nSet in New York City in alternating time periods – the 1950s and the early 2000s – Pollock’s Last Lover is the engrossing tale of two women whose lives collide as they contend with the art and legacy of the brilliant\, tragic painter Jackson Pollock. Gwen is an associate at a prestigious auction house tasked with verifying the authenticity of a Pollock painting offered by Ruth Kligman\, who had a tempestuous relationship with the painter. \nFrom smoky Greenwich Village dive bars to glitzy art auctions\, from the empty studio of a man once known for his artistic stamina to the fine museums where his works hang\, the controversial painting provides a window into two eras and the ongoing struggle of women to develop power and freedom on their own terms. \nStephen P. Kiernan is the author of the novels The Curiosity\, The Hummingbird\, The Baker’s Secret\, Universe of Two\, and The Glass Chateau. A graduate of Middlebury College\, Johns Hopkins University\, and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop\, he spent more than twenty years as a journalist\, winning many awards before turning to fiction writing. He has also worked nationwide on improving end-of-life medical care through greater use of hospice. Kiernan lives in Vermont. \nM.T. Anderson has written stories for adults\, picture books for children\, adventure novels for young readers\, graphic novel adaptations of ancient French tales\, and several books for older readers (both teens and adults). His satirical book Feed was a Finalist for the National Book Award\, won the L.A. Times Book Prize\, and is included on several lists of “best YA novels.” A nonfiction book\, Symphony for the City of the Dead: Dmitri Shostakovich and the Siege of Leningrad\, was long-listed for the National Book Award. He has curated concerts that bring together text and classical music all over New England. \nYankee Bookshop will be on hand with copies of Pollock’s Last Lover.

SUMMARY:Ben Mezrich | Checkmate: Genius\, Lies\, Ambition\, and the Biggest Scandal in Chess
DESCRIPTION:NWPL and Yankee Bookshop welcome Ben Mezrich back with another investigation—this time into the high-stakes world of chess. \nIn September 2022\, the unthinkable happened: nineteen-year-old American chess prodigy Hans Niemann defeated world champion Magnus Carlsen in a stunning face-to-face match. Within days\, Carlsen accused Niemann of cheating—a bombshell allegation that rocked the chess world. As the scandal spiraled\, Chess.com—the dominant force in online chess—launched a high-stakes investigation\, igniting a global media firestorm. \nBut Checkmate is about more than a cheating scandal. It’s the story of a teenager willing to risk everything to rise to the top; a reclusive genius suddenly fighting to protect his legacy; and a centuries-old game transforming into a billion-dollar industry fueled by streaming\, sponsorships\, and Silicon Valley power players. \nWith exclusive access to the central figures\, Ben Mezrich takes readers deep inside the weird\, wild\, and cutthroat world of competitive chess—where genius meets ambition\, and every move could be your last. \nBen Mezrich is the New York Times bestselling author of The Accidental Billionaires (adapted by Aaron Sorkin into the David Fincher film The Social Network)\, Bringing Down the House (adapted into the #1 box office hit film 21)\, The Antisocial Network (adapted into the 2023 film Dumb Money)\, and many other bestselling books.

SUMMARY:Emily Franklin | Love & Other Monsters.
DESCRIPTION:The NWPL and Yankee Bookshop welcome Emily Franklin to talk about her newest novel\, Love & Other Monsters. \nIn the stormy\, scandalous summer of 1816\, daring eighteen-year-old Claire Clairmont changed the course of literature forever. But then — unlike her stepsister Mary Shelley — she was forgotten\, until now. With searing relevance to our here and now — of celebrity worship\, climate disaster\, of complicated femininity\, Love & Other Monsters is the untold origin story of Frankenstein\, a feminist reckoning of sisters\, survival\, and the creation of monsters — both those on the page and those who walk among us. \nEmily Franklin is the bestselling author of more than twenty books\, including a poetry collection\, Tell Me How You Got Here. Her work has been published in The New York Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Kenyon Review\, and The Journal of the American Medical Association\, read aloud on National Public Radio\, named notable by the Association of Jewish Libraries\, and longlisted for the London Sunday Times Short Story Award. Her novel The Lioness of Boston\, based on the life of trailblazer Isabella Stewart Gardner\, is in its tenth printing. \nYankee Bookshop will be on hand with copies of Love & Other Monsters.
