SUMMARY:“A New Nation\, Conceived in Liberty…”: Enlightenment Idealism and the Reality of the Modern World | Ron Miller
DESCRIPTION:Part one of “250 Years: Looking Back & Looking Ahead\,” a four-part lecture series at Norman Williams Public Library co-hosted by Woodstock History Center in collaboration with the Vermont Humanities Council. \n+++ \nThe United States is a paradoxical nation\, established in a burst of idealism that has inspired generations of Americans\, yet weighed down by oppressive cultural legacies that stubbornly persist. In 1776\, giving voice to Enlightenment faith in reason\, progress\, and the “rights of man\,” Thomas Paine asserted\, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again\,” and the Declaration of Independence seemed to represent a fresh start for humanity. But old prejudices\, old power structures\, and old flaws of human nature remained unvanquished\, and up to our own time they have effectively limited the revolutionary potential of the Declaration. The struggles of the past twelve score and ten years suggest that the power of Enlightenment idealism is considerably more modest than Paine\, Jefferson\, and their fellow revolutionaries wanted to believe. \nRon Miller of South Burlington has been an educational scholar and activist\, teacher\, publisher and bookseller\, community leader\, and philanthropist. He received a Ph.D. from Boston University in American Studies. He has authored several books\, and has founded\, published\, or edited several magazines. He has taught at Goddard College and Champlain College\, and helped establish the Bellwether School in Williston. From 2014 to 2021\, he ran the Learning Lab in Woodstock\, where he taught American history and other topics. He is a past president of the Norman Williams Public Library and has served on several other nonprofit boards.

SUMMARY:Lyn Swett Miller | Mezzanine Gallery Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Meet photographer Lyn Swett Miller and enjoy her exhibition\, “Meandering Mold: Messages from a Garden Library\,” at a special reception in the Mezzanine Gallery. \nLyn Swett Miller is a micro-climate photographer living in Quechee\, Vermont. For more than a decade\, compost has been her muse for photography and metaphor for everything. Objects\, like a vintage Shakespeare\, her mother-in-law’s thesaurus\, and her Harvard diploma\, found new meaning when mixed with food scraps\, inspiring questions about not just food waste and consumption\, but also about privilege and the power of narrative. Recent work includes “Lebanon Landfill – An Intimate Portrait\,” “Meandering Mold: Messages from a Garden Library\,” and 13 Tons of Love\, a weekly newsletter on Substack. Lyn is an active member of the Kinship Photography Collective. \nArtist Statement \n“Saturated pages congeal\, micro-organisms find a home\, and poetry presents itself. Welcome to my Garden Library\, a living laboratory where\, for two years\, groups of books slowly decomposed between logs\, offering stage ‘sets’ for ephemeral fungi and meandering mold. \n“When I first brought books to this once-forgotten part of the garden\, I was grieving the deaths of my brother-in-law and mother. I’d recently cleared out a collection of art history texts\, but there were too many for the compost pile\, where I’ve often integrated old books. Longing for solace from the land\, something no book could provide\, I wondered what the earth might create when she interacted with these tomes. \n“My intention was to document these objects for years as they “melted” into the earth. Instead\, we decided to move\, so I cleaned that part of the garden. This collection reveals what I found. After many moons\, the earth had embraced the books\, filling their pages with entirely new kinds of art. The images offer messages from the future and the past converging within these old reference books. This work invites conversation on the meaning of mark-making and narrative as well as on earth’s regenerative\, transformational\, and renewing power.”

SUMMARY:Julia Cooke | Starry and Restless - in conversation with Jeff Sharlet
DESCRIPTION:The Norman Williams Public Library and Yankee Bookshop are pleased to launch Starry and Restless: Three Women Who Changed Work\, Writing\, and the World\, the third book by local author Julia Cooke. \nStarry and Restless is a page-turning story of Rebecca West\, Emily “Mickey” Hahn\, and Martha Gellhorn\, three reporters whose curiosity\, grit\, and ambition expanded the possibilities for women and meaningful work. The writer will discuss the ways these pioneering women changed how we see the world and the role of journalism with Jeff Sharlet\, Professor of Creative Non-fiction at Dartmouth College and the author of numerous award-winning essays and books. \n+++ \nWest\, Hahn\, and Gellhorn reported from the Congo\, the American South\, Cuba\, the lively salons of Shanghai\, Yugoslavia on the brink of World War II\, the shot-riddled streets of Spain\, Hong Kong under Japanese occupation\, Germany and Italy at war\, post-Blitz London\, McCarthy-era Mexico\, and beyond. These women didn’t just bear witness to the great changes of the twentieth century; they didn’t just write the backstory to wars that roused their readers to support; they transformed the very world they were describing\, and the way it was understood. \nEach writer traversed the globe\, searching for stories they would then dispatch to The New Yorker\, The Times (London)\, The New York Times\, The New Republic\, The Atlantic Monthly\, Collier’s\, and Vogue. They often traveled alone\, sometimes teaming up with other women reporters\, sometimes with their husbands along for the ride. They sneaked onto the front lines when they were forbidden\, and interviewed civilians to gather color and detail. They wrote novels to pay the bills and articles to explain the world to itself. Over the course of their intertwining lives\, they became mothers and friends\, and took joy in each other’s successes. \n+++ \nJulia Cooke is the author of the books Come Fly the World\, a Goodreads Choice Awards finalist and a Malala’s Book Club pick\, and The Other Side of Paradise: Life in the New Cuba\, a collection of vignettes covering the daily lives of Cubans. Her reporting has been published in Condé Nast Traveler\, The New York Times\, Playboy\, The Village Voice\, and more. Her essays have been published in Salon\, The Threepenny Review\, Smithsonian\, Tin House\, and Virginia Quarterly Review\, where she is a contributing editor. Her work has been anthologized in various iterations of Best American Essays and Best American Travel Writing among other publications. \nJeff Sharlet is the author or editor of eight books\, most recently The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War\, a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist for Nonfiction\, one of The New York Times 100 Books of the Year\, and a New Republic book of the year. His other books include This Brilliant Darkness: A Book of Strangers\, Sweet Heaven When I Die\, C Street\, The Family – (the basis for the 2019 Netflix documentary series)\, Killing the Buddha; and two edited volumes. He has received numerous awards and fellowships. Sharlet is an editor-at-large for VQR\, and is or has been a contributing editor for Vanity Fair\, Harper’s and Rolling Stone\, and a contributor to publications including The New York Times Magazine\, GQ\, Esquire\, and Mother Jones.

SUMMARY:Interplay Jazz Jam Session | Library After Hours
DESCRIPTION:Musicians and listeners alike are invited to attend and enjoy this Interplay Jazz Jam Session on the Mezzanine with its great acoustics and baby grand piano. \nThese jam sessions are a social gathering and a communal practice session. Starting at 6:30 pm\, instrumentalists participate in free-flow tunes to develop new material and play together. Continuing at 7:30\, singers may wish to join in. Bring well-known jazz standards\, popular songs or an original tune to play with the instrumentalists along with 6-8 copies of the sheet music of the songs you wish to play. Jam session ends at 9:30 pm. \nFounded in 1996 by local musicians Fred Haas and Sabrina Brown\, Interplay Jazz & Arts has been inspiring musicians of all ages from around the world. People often ask\, “What is a jam session?” A jam session is a relatively informal musical event at which musicians\, typically instrumentalists\, play improvised solos and vamp on tunes\, songs and chord progressions. To “jam” is to improvise music without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements\, except for when the group is playing well-known jazz standards or covers of existing popular songs. \nYou are invited to bring an offering of food or drink to share if you’d like.

SUMMARY:Wrensong Presents “Songs of Celebration Through the Centuries”
DESCRIPTION:A Wassail tradition returns with a sampler of holiday songs performed by Wrensong on the Mezzanine following the Horse & Carriage Parade around the Green. \nWrensong is an a cappella choral group from Vermont’s Upper Valley that focuses on the vocal treasures of the Renaissance. Their repertoire ranges from the secular to the religious\, and concerts often include narration aimed at giving audiences a context for listening with understanding. For the holiday program\, singers present a mix of songs – some simple\, some familiar\, some more complex\, and some sing-along. \nWrensong’s 2025 holiday program traces the enduring human impulse to celebrate light\, hope\, and renewal through song. \nBeginning with the rousing 13th-century processional chant Alle Psallite\, they explore the rich tapestry of sacred and seasonal music across the ages. They include the exquisite 15th-century carol There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu and the luminous O Magnum Mysterium by Jacobus Clemens non Papa\, as well as hymns honoring the Virgin Mary by William Byrd and Tomás Luis de Victoria\, reflecting the deep reverence of the Renaissance. \nThe lively traditional spiritual Rise Up\, Shepherd\, and Follow\, the beautiful shape-note style carol Bethlehem by 18th century American composer William Billings\, and beloved Christmas carols express the warmth and vitality of community celebration. Music honoring Hanukkah and the winter solstice broadens the lens of festivity and reflection. \nThe program concludes with timeless popular favorites — Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire and Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! — reminding us that\, across centuries and traditions\, music continues to bring joy\, comfort\, and shared meaning to the season. \n*** \nFree and open to the public. Seating is limited; first-come\, first-seated.

SUMMARY:Ham Gillett presents Dylan Thomas’s Lyrical Portrait of Holidays Past
DESCRIPTION:Send the kids to romp outside\, take off your apron\, stash the light-hanging ladder\, and join us on Saturday\, December 13\, from 12:00-12:30 OR 1:00-1:30 for Ham Gillett’s traditional Wassail reading. \nThe Welsh poet\, Dylan Thomas looks back with a child’s-eye view of a magical time of presents\, family\, and newly fallen snow in the seasonal classic A Child’s Christmas in Wales\, written in the early 1950s. \nHam Gillett has shared this story during Wassail Weekend for more years than he can remember. He offers us a time to be still\, to close our eyes\, and be transported by Thomas’s matchless weaving of lyrical words and evocative images. \nThe Uncles (from A Child’s Christmas in Wales) Illustration by Fritz Eichenberg \n“Our snow … came shawling out of the ground and swam and drifted out of the arms and hands and bodies of the trees; snow grew overnight on the roofs of the houses like a pure and grandfather moss\, minutely-ivied the walls and settled on the postman\, opening the gate\, like a dumb\, numb thunder-storm of white\, torn Christmas cards.” – Dylan Thomas \n+++ \nThis reading is free and open to the public and – despite the essay’s title – is geared toward listeners 10 and older. First-come\, first-seated\, space is limited.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Courtney Floyd | Higher Magic
DESCRIPTION:Join the Yankee Bookshop and NWPL to celebrate the launch of Higher Magic by local author Courtney Floyd! \nIn this incisive\, irreverent\, and whimsical cozy dark academia novel\, a struggling mage student with intense anxiety must prove that classic literature contained magic—and learn to wield her own stories to change her institution for the better. \nFirst-generation graduate student Dorothe Bartleby has one last chance to pass the Magic program’s qualifying exam after freezing with anxiety during her first attempt. If she fails to demonstrate that magic in classic literature changed the world\, she’ll be kicked out of the university. And now her advisor insists she reframe her entire dissertation using Digimancy. While mages have found a way to combine computers and magic\, Bartleby’s fated to never make it work. \nThis time is no exception. Her revised working goes horribly wrong\, creating a talking skull named Anne that narrates Bartleby’s inner thoughts—even the most embarrassing ones—like she’s a heroine in a Jane Austen novel. Out of her depth\, she recruits James\, an unfairly attractive mage candidate\, to help her stop Anne’s glitches in time for her exam. \nInstead\, Anne leads them to a shocking and dangerous discovery: Magic students who seek disability accommodations are disappearing—quite literally. When the administration fails to act\, Bartleby must learn to trust her own knowledge and skills. Otherwise\, she risks losing both the missing students and her future as a mage\, permanently. \n+++ \nCourtney Floyd is a neurodivergent fantasy author who grew up in New Mexico\, where she learned to write between tarantula turf wars and apocalyptic dust storms. She currently lives at the bottom of a haunted mountain in the woods of Vermont with her partner and pets. Higher Magic is her debut novel. \nCourtney has a PhD in British Literature and a penchant for irreverent literary allusions. Her short stories have appeared in publications including Fireside Magazine\, Small Wonders\, and Haven Spec\, and her audio drama\, The Way We Haunt Now\, is available wherever you get your podcasts. \n+++ \nThis event is free and open to all! The Yankee Bookshop is co-host and will be on hand with books for purchase and autographing.

SUMMARY:Understanding AI with Brian Dellinger
DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere these days. It’s dominating headlines\, embedded in our devices\, and rapidly transforming how we work\, communicate\, and interact with technology. \nBrian Dellinger\, Associate Director of IT\, Dartmouth College\, Geisel School of Medicine\, aims to demystify AI for non-technical users. Through examples and analogies\, he will help us build a basic understanding of what modern AI is about and how it is used to do seemingly intelligent things. Then\, drawing on that knowledge\, we will take a closer look at the strengths and weaknesses of current tools and discuss what the future may hold. \nFree and all are welcome.
