SUMMARY:Sensoria: Attending to the Wonder and Vitality of Nature
DESCRIPTION:Gavin Van Horn\, editor\, and Heather Swan\, poetry editor\, selected essays and poetry for Sensoria: Attending to the Wonder and Vitality of Nature that call attention to the wondrous ways in which humans and other-than-human beings experience and perceive the world\, not just through the senses but within them. \nHumans\, along with all other creatures\, are an entanglement of sensual relations\, shaping and shaped by our somatic engagement with the world. From the mating calls of chorus frogs to insect olfaction to elephant funerary rites to the memory-rich tastes of place\, Sensoria offers an immersion in the sensual experiences of seeing\, hearing\, touching\, tasting\, and smelling—and their interactions\, combinations\, and more-than-human manifestations. \nThe contributors to Sensoria—including music composer David Rothenberg\, historian of color Carolyn Purnell\, bio-philosopher Andreas Weber\, filmmaker Kalyanee Mam\, neuroethologist Bill Hansson\, travel writer and novelist Nick Hunt\, and religious scholar Graham Harvey—explore and illuminate the biology and neurology of sensation as well as the imaginative possibilities for understanding the senses. \nCo-hosted by the Yankee Bookshop\, books will be available for purchase and signing. \n+++ \nGavin Van Horn\, PhD\, is the executive editor of Humans & Nature Press Books\, the author of The Way of Coyote\, and the co-editor of City Creatures: Animal Encounters in the Chicago Wilderness\, Wildness: Relations of People and Place\, the award-winning five-volume series Kinship: Belonging in a World of Relations\, and the five-volume series Elementals. He currently resides in San Luis Obispo\, California\, where you can find him wandering the nearby hills and shores\, senses awakened by sage\, hummingbirds\, and ocean air. \nHeather Swan\, PhD\, is a poet and nonfiction writer. She is the author of Where the Grass Still Sings: Stories of Insects and Interconnection and Where Honeybees Thrive: Stories from the Field (Penn State Press) winner of the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award. Her poetry collection A Kinship with Ash (Terrapin Books)\, was a finalist for the ASLE Book Award and long-listed for the Julie Suk Award. A second collection\, Dandelion\, was published in 2023. She teaches environmental literature and writing in Madison\, Wisconsin.

DESCRIPTION:Test your knowledge! NWPL’s own Adrian Tans will challenge us with trivia questions that run the gamut from pop culture\, sports\, history\, and – of course – books. The winning team gets bragging rights and their picture on the coveted digital display board! \nThis Library After Hours event is a “fun-raiser” and mini-fundraiser: there is a $5 suggested donation per player.  Gather friends for a team – or come on your own and join forces with others here. Fun fact: more often than not\, members of the winning teams had just met that night! \nThis event is BYOB\, so feel free to bring your own drinks (including beer and wine); the library will supply snacks. Doors open at 6:30; the game will start promptly at 7:00. \nOur monthly Library After Hours events are intended as social evenings for adults. NWPL children’s programming is scheduled during daytime hours.

DESCRIPTION:Surrounded by cobwebs and creepy noises coming out of the dark corners\, you might encounter a lonely witch or hairy goblin waiting for you on Sunday afternoon at the library. Enter the old\, haunted great hall\, and find your way through the spooky stacks. Be careful\, there may be a ghost or two! Then it’s down\, down to the dungeon… \n…where you will discover the Halloween Party in the Children’s Room! \nPlease join us for not-too-scary tricks and lots of treats – fun for the younger set and the less intrepid among us. \nCostumes are encouraged. Children under 11 must be accompanied by a caregiver 14 or older for everyone’s peace of mind. \nAdrian Tans & skeleton at a SBOOKY Library party \nThe SBOOKY LIBRARY event is free and open to all; donations to support this event are appreciated.

SUMMARY:Homer's Odyssey | "One-off" Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Intrigued about all the buzz about the Odyssey\, a poem nearly 3\,000 years old? The Norman Williams Public Library will host a special “One-off” community book discussion about Homer’s ancient epic on Tuesday\, October 27 at 6 pm. \nLianna Kish will guide our discussion of its timeless themes: power\, violence and the aftermath of war; wealth and poverty; marriage and family; travel\, hospitality\, and the yearning for home. We will explore the Bronze Age\, the period that produced the epic\, the poem’s major themes\, and its lasting influence. \nYou are welcome to read any of the many translations of the Odyssey. The poem is available as audio editions on CD or as digital downloads. There is also a graphic novel adaptation by Garth Hines in our young adult collection. \n+++ \nLiana Kish taught English in Newton\, MA\, for 24 years before moving to Vermont. She loves the slower pace of Vermont life and enjoys spending time outdoors\, especially gardening and kayaking. When she’s not outside\, she is often reading or trying out a new baking recipe.
