SUMMARY:Ham Gillett presents Dylan Thomas’s Lyrical Portrait of Holidays Past
DESCRIPTION:Send the kids to romp outside\, take off your apron\, stash the light-hanging ladder\, and join us on Saturday\, December 13\, from 12:00-12:30 OR 1:00-1:30 for Ham Gillett’s traditional Wassail reading. \nThe Welsh poet\, Dylan Thomas looks back with a child’s-eye view of a magical time of presents\, family\, and newly fallen snow in the seasonal classic A Child’s Christmas in Wales\, written in the early 1950s. \nHam Gillett has shared this story during Wassail Weekend for more years than he can remember. He offers us a time to be still\, to close our eyes\, and be transported by Thomas’s matchless weaving of lyrical words and evocative images. \nThe Uncles (from A Child’s Christmas in Wales) Illustration by Fritz Eichenberg \n“Our snow … came shawling out of the ground and swam and drifted out of the arms and hands and bodies of the trees; snow grew overnight on the roofs of the houses like a pure and grandfather moss\, minutely-ivied the walls and settled on the postman\, opening the gate\, like a dumb\, numb thunder-storm of white\, torn Christmas cards.” – Dylan Thomas \n+++ \nThis reading is free and open to the public and – despite the essay’s title – is geared toward listeners 10 and older. First-come\, first-seated\, space is limited.

SUMMARY:Wrensong Presents “Songs of Celebration Through the Centuries”
DESCRIPTION:A Wassail tradition returns with a sampler of holiday songs performed by Wrensong on the Mezzanine following the Horse & Carriage Parade around the Green. \nWrensong is an a cappella choral group from Vermont’s Upper Valley that focuses on the vocal treasures of the Renaissance. Their repertoire ranges from the secular to the religious\, and concerts often include narration aimed at giving audiences a context for listening with understanding. For the holiday program\, singers present a mix of songs – some simple\, some familiar\, some more complex\, and some sing-along. \nWrensong’s 2025 holiday program traces the enduring human impulse to celebrate light\, hope\, and renewal through song. \nBeginning with the rousing 13th-century processional chant Alle Psallite\, they explore the rich tapestry of sacred and seasonal music across the ages. They include the exquisite 15th-century carol There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu and the luminous O Magnum Mysterium by Jacobus Clemens non Papa\, as well as hymns honoring the Virgin Mary by William Byrd and Tomás Luis de Victoria\, reflecting the deep reverence of the Renaissance. \nThe lively traditional spiritual Rise Up\, Shepherd\, and Follow\, the beautiful shape-note style carol Bethlehem by 18th century American composer William Billings\, and beloved Christmas carols express the warmth and vitality of community celebration. Music honoring Hanukkah and the winter solstice broadens the lens of festivity and reflection. \nThe program concludes with timeless popular favorites — Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire and Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! — reminding us that\, across centuries and traditions\, music continues to bring joy\, comfort\, and shared meaning to the season. \n*** \nFree and open to the public. Seating is limited; first-come\, first-seated.

SUMMARY:Author Event: Michael Caduto | Enchanted Night Before Christmas.
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author\, storyteller\, and educator\, Michael Caduto\, has a brand new storybook to share: Enchanted Night Before Christmas. \nThis timeless fantasy tells the story of a Vermont family that doesn’t have much\, but takes good care of one another and is generous to others. Each year\, they make gingerbread cookies decorated like friends and neighbors as holiday gifts. Then\, one Christmas Eve\, after everyone falls fast asleep\, something magical stirs\, born in a star of snow\, that will change their holiday – and their lives – forever. It is a reminder that the most powerful gifts are the ones we give away. \nJoin us at 11 for a reading of the book\, followed by a gingerbread decorating activity with cookies supplied by the Pastry Team at the Woodstock Inn. This program has limited capacity\, so entry will be on a first-come\, first-served basis\, while supplies last. \nCo-sponsored by the Yankee Bookshop; copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
