DESCRIPTION:The library will be closed Monday\, January 19\, in observance of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day. \nFirst declared a federal holiday in 1983\, MLK Day is observed on the third Monday of January each year. It commemorates the life and work of Dr. King\, who was a Baptist minister and prominent leader in the American civil rights movement. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill in November 1983. The first federal King holiday was celebrated in 1986. \nBorn in 1929\, King was a spokesperson for the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He advanced civil rights for people of color in the United States through the use of nonviolent resistance and nonviolent civil disobedience against Jim Crow laws and other forms of legalized discrimination. \nPeople are encouraged to use the day to reflect on King’s legacy\, focus on the issues of civil rights\, promote non-violent social change\, and perform public service. \n*** \nWhen the library is closed\, patrons can use our online catalog to renew books\, and place books on hold in addition to accessing eBooks\, eAudiobooks\, and movies to download and stream.
