Hail to the Chief (Librarian)! – A verse by Margaret Edwards

HAIL TO THE CHIEF (Librarian)
a verse by Margaret Edwards honoring Jen Belton

Jennifer Belton
Congratulations to Jen on her retirement!

presented on December 27, 2015

A library’s more than how it looks.
It’s more than stacks and stacks of books.
It’s more than hours and hours spent
On items recovered and items lent.
It’s more than Quiet where folks can read
And more than a slow-down for heedless speed.
It’s more than a vast, erudite collection
Of tomes requiring steadfast protection.
It’s more than a trove of organized facts
That ever expands and never contracts.
It’s even more than the opportunity
To reinforce—or invent—community,
Or learn our history, learn what’s new,
Confirm our beliefs, or revise a few.
A library’s magic is all these things—
But more—it gives our mind its wings.
It helps the process that it inspires.
What leadership this place requires!

Its Chief Librarian, at the helm,
Is forceful, but not to overwhelm—
Is calm and wise, with a steady vision,
And able to act with verve and precision.
This paragon is a diplomat
And a genial friend, with a feature that
Is always winning: a joyful smile.
Someone who goes the extra mile.
Our library’s chief has been all this,
And we know just whom we’re going to miss.
We know how lucky this place has been
In the capable hands of wonderful Jen.

THANK YOU, Jen Belton!
